We are looking for paediatric nurses to join our specialist inpatient service, Bursledon House, a 12-bedded complex medical and psychological paediatric unit. If you’re looking for a rewarding challenge and have what it takes to make a difference to a child’s life, then we want to hear from you.

About Bursledon

House Bursledon House is a unique provision run by a small but extremely dedicated team. We provide assessment and treatment of disorders and illness for children from 0-16 years including:

  • chronic fatigue syndrome/ME
  • severe feeding disorders
  • unexplained medical conditions
  • difficult to manage chronic illness (such as diabetes)
  • complex bowel issues
  • complex psychiatric problems
  • Rehab for patients with head injuries

We do this using holistic, medical and psychological models of treatment in a homely and welcoming environment. The unit is a non-medical setting with our own gardens and onsite school. We are part of the Southampton Children’s Hospital, part of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. We are based on the edge of the Southampton General Hospital site, open Monday to Friday, with the children going home at weekends to consolidate their treatment.

To ensure the best outcomes for our children and adolescents, we work closely as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) including (but not limited to) doctors, play specialists, Physio/OT, teachers and healthcare assistants.

What we’re looking for

We’d love to hear from paediatric nurses with previous experience in working with children who have complex emotional, educational, psychological, and challenging needs and behaviours. We’d also love to hear from paediatric nurses who don’t have direct experience, but are keen to develop skills in this area.

We can offer you further training in many specialist areas, as well as mentoring and supervision. All our members of staff receive comprehensive corporate and local inductions, and we will work with you to help you achieve and maintain the healthcare career you aspire to.

As well as the relevant NMC registration, you will need to demonstrate:

  • excellent communication skills
  • a positive approach to challenges
  • the ability to maintain boundaries in a firm but kind and caring manner

You will also need to the ability to relate to children of different ages, and have the necessary skills to engage in appropriate and meaningful therapeutic relationships.

About our Trust

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of England's largest acute teaching trusts. We’ve worked hard as a Trust to improve the efficiency of our services and as a result, we are currently in financial surplus.

We’ve recently been rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we ranked:

  • seventh in the country for staff engagement
  • fourth best nationally for our proportion of staff saying that they would recommend the hospital as a place to work or to receive care

About Southampton
