Whether you're an experienced healthcare assistant or just starting out – if you're caring, compassionate and looking for a new challenge, then we’ll have a role for you! Apply to join the team at University Hospital Southampton and take the next steps in your healthcare career.

What we’re looking for

Our top priority is finding the right type of person who shares our values of patients first, working together, and always improving. You don't need to have previous experience working in a hospital setting.

We're looking for individuals with the ability and attitude to grow and develop into a valued member of our team. Whatever level of skill or experience you currently have, if you're able to demonstrate drive and potential, our comprehensive induction and in-house training teams will help you reach your full potential.

We’d love to hear from you if you're:

- Eager to develop clinical skills
- Motivated and forward thinking
- Looking for a challenge within a busy working environment
- Wishing to be part of a first-class team delivering a high-quality service

All applicants must be fully flexible to cover a variety of shifts including early, late, long days and nights – as our services operate 24 hours, 365 days a year.

Where we’re recruiting

We're recruiting across all our sites, including Southampton General Hospital,  Princess Anne Hospital and Royal South Hants Hospital, and there are opportunities available across many of our patient services, including (but not limited to):

- Eye unit
- Theatres
- Trauma and orthopaedics
- Medicine for older people
- Neurology
- Outpatients
- Specialist medicine

Please note that we currently have very limited opportunities within our paediatric services, so you may wish to consider an alternative area when making your application.

Why should you come to work for UHS?

We actively support career pathways and your personal development by offering NVQ and apprenticeship opportunities to those with the ability, attitude, and desire to grow and develop their healthcare career.

As a healthcare assistant at UHS, there are opportunities available that you can apply for to help you develop within your role and to progress towards the *nursing associate apprenticeship or *nursing degree apprenticeship programme. Being recruited as a healthcare support worker does not guarantee acceptance onto one of these apprenticeships and these will be subject to further application and interview onto a programme.

*Please note: UHS do not recruit externally directly on to these 2 apprenticeship programmes.

We provide a supportive and comprehensive induction process to enable you to complete your care certificate, find your feet within the organisation, and quickly integrate into our team.

As well as being part of a highly committed team who take pride in delivering the highest standard of patient care, there are a number of other benefits to working at UHS including a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata) on appointment, on-site nursery facilities (subject to availability), and a generous pension scheme.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of England's largest acute teaching trusts and we are delighted to have recently been rated ‘Good’ by the CQC. In the latest national NHS Staff Survey we ranked seventh in the country for staff engagement and fourth best nationally for our proportion of staff saying that they would recommend the hospital as a place to work or to receive care.

Selection and assessment process

We hold recruitment evenings on a weekly basis; if your application is successful, we’ll contact you to book you an interview date and time. We only have a limited number of spaces available so attendance is by invitation only

The first stage of our selection process will involve a short interview and if you're successful at this stage, we'll then send you an invite to our next selection day - with full instructions and details of what to expect.

To begin the process, please complete our application form below.
