Award-winning care, UK firsts, and groundbreaking clinical trials are all in a day’s work for a UHS nurse. At University Hospital Southampton our patients are at the forefront of everything we do, and we believe that our nursing workforce is vital to ensuring that this is the case.

Each day brings exciting new challenges and opportunities to improve our services and ourselves. It’s a supportive, vibrant and friendly place, where all members of the team work together to deliver the best possible care.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for nurses to join teams across our Trust. Because we provide a broad range of services, caring for patients from across the south of England from the start of life to the end, you have huge variety in the people you work with, the patients you see, and the career pathways on offer to you.

We are currently recruiting to the following care groups:

We’re looking for both full and part time nurses to join us, and we aim to try and be as flexible as we can when it comes to the shift patterns we offer.

If you have a particular shift pattern that you’d prefer – nights only, weekends, long days etc. let us know in your supporting statement and we’ll do our best to accommodate you wherever possible.

What we can offer you

Your development is central to our vision of delivering high quality, safe and effective care, so we offer a fantastic induction and exceptional in-house and external training and development, giving you the best possible opportunities to achieve your career goals.

Working collaboratively as part of a bigger team, you’ll get all the support you need to do an amazing job as you explore where your future could take you. There will be plenty of opportunities to grow your career and take the lead, for example as a ward nurse or nurse practitioner, or as a specialist nurse in nurse-led clinics or outreach services.

About our Trust

We are one of England's largest acute teaching trusts and have recently been rated ‘Good’ by the CQC. In the latest national NHS Staff Survey we ranked;

  • seventh in the country for staff engagement
  • fourth best nationally for our proportion of staff saying that they would recommend our hospital as a place to work or to receive care

We think being a UHS nurse is pretty fantastic, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what some of our nursing staff have to say about working here:

“I love working at UHS because of the support available, the dedicated teamwork, the resources and the state-of-the-art facilities. The best thing about my job is my team and the best thing about my team is that we always work together.”

  • Philandra Costello, genomics clinical nurse specialist

“The best thing about my job is being able to take the time to really listen to patients, their concerns or fears and being able to support them in a holistic way with the rest of the multidisciplinary team to overcome them and help get their lives back to normal. I feel valued in my team, and really enjoy the strong and honest working relationship we have.”

  • Tilly Steane, gastroenterology nurse practitioner

About Southampton

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work. Situated on the south coast, with an international airport, meaning you are only a short flight away from Paris, Madrid, or Milan, and only an hour on the train from central London. The picturesque New Forest National Park and the beaches of the Jurassic Coast are also right on our doorstep.

The city offers living costs 20% lower than those of London, 13 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted and as many as 13 expansive parks and green spaces to enjoy.

At UHS, we are guided by our values of putting patients first, always improving and working together. So if you’re passionate about patient care, dedicated to making progressive improvements, and a great collaborator, we’d love you to join us.
