An exciting opportunity is on offer at University Hospital Southampton NHSFT for the highly motivated and enthusiastic registered practitioners to join our 35 Operating Theatres. We are currently accepting applications for Anaesthetic, Scrub and Recovery practitioner roles. 

The posts are open to all newly qualified Nurses and ODP's, also for those with previous theatre experience and to anyone who are planning to change their career pathway. 

We have vacancies across all specialties ranging from Neonates, Paediatrics and Adult service both in Emergency and Elective procedures. 

We are a leading Major Trauma Centre, Regional and Tertiary Specialist Centre, World-class Research Centre and a teaching hospital linked with University of Southampton. Some of our pioneering works have been featured on national television and our clinical experts have received international recognition in their area of clinical expertise and excellence

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

For us, effective communication is fundamental to this role (written and verbal) as such you should have good communication skills, a flexible approach and ability to work on your own initiative.

  • dynamic, motivated and enthusiastic, who are also keen team players

  • have good attention to detail as you will be dealing with patients, relatives and staff across the Trust and within all disciplines

  • willing to working as part of the multi-disciplinary team

  • willing to work alongside others to facilitate the smooth and efficient running of the operating theatre

  • willing to provide clinical collaboration and team working with other specialist service to cover out of hours care provision

  • willing to provide support and mentor new starters in theatre after successful completion of your competencies

  • willing to participate as an integral member of the theatre team giving guidance to less experienced staff

  • willing to provide skilled specialist assistance in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care throughout the Operating Theatres

Experience is an advantage, however relevant training will be provided and protected learner in practice time fully supported.

This job description has the intention of representing multi skilled staff working in one or more areas of scrub, anaesthetics and recovery.

We offer a full-time post (37.5 hours/week) and part-time hours can be discussed at interview. The full range of shifts can be discussed during an informal visit or during the interview. Applicants are reminded that we also cover a 24 hours 7 days a week service for our emergency theatres and there is an expectation that successful applicants will be rostered to work those shifts.

  • Professional registration with HCPC or NMC

  • Awareness of professional regulations in NHS

  • Someone who is motivated and enthusiastic with a passion to learn and contribute to the service

  • An understanding of working in an area that provides an emergency service 24/7

  • Able to deal with stressful situations in a calm and professional manner

UHS hosts the annual “Thoracic Surgery Course for Health Professionals” which attracts delegates from across the UK and is well received by the delegates.

We also host the Trauma Theatre Practitioner Course which includes the Fundamentals of AO Fracture Fixation and Limb Reconstruction.

UHS host the regional spinal surgery and is a leading centre for Cancer and Laparoscopic procedures and some of their pioneering works have been featured in news articles and on National Television.

Our Paediatric Service had received recognition from the Wessex Academic Health Science Patient Safety Award.
