Job overview

We are looking for a creative and passionate digital creator to help share the brilliant research done here in Southampton, and support the people and teams that make it happen. 

COVID-19 has shone a light on the value of clinical research like never before. Southampton was in the thick of things, finding answers fast. We helped deliver new coronavirus tests, drugs and PPE through to the vaccine trials that paved the way out.

Our growing Southampton Centre for Research Engagement & Impact was central to that. We work across audiences and channels, developing amazing content from the cutting edge of clinical research. That drives public engagement and participation in research, builds a strong research culture and shares our impact.  

There's a huge breadth of subjects and outputs, from campaigns to bespoke website builds - all in the name of helping find better treatments and care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Your Responsibilities

What you’ll do

You will be responsible for producing and delivering creative digital assets for a wide range of projects. These include but are not limited to

  • Infographics
  • Videos
  • Animations
  • Online assets
  • Banners and social plaques

You will be responsible for getting a brief, developing concept and design, and delivering digital outputs within the given timeframe.

In this role, you will work closely with R&D communications managers, researchers, and suppliers. You will make sure we provide appropriate and engaging content to the public, our staff, health professionals and stakeholders. You will work across health subjects and disease areas to engage and involve people in our work.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who can deliver digital outputs that really connect with audiences. A strong background in digital design, confidence in using Adobe Creative Suite, and ability to use videography kit is essential. We also need your great interpersonal skills, because of the range of relationships across public groups, our departments and different organisations.

Presenting research clearly and accurately can be challenging. We’re looking for you to cut through the complexity to give people reasons to care and the key messages.

Familiarity with communications in the NHS R&D, National Institute for Health and Care Research and/or clinical academic environment is desirable. However what you’ll need above all is initiative, an appetite for challenging content and demonstrable ability in delivering in complex working environments.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Degree l or equivalent level or experience
  • Qualification in digital communications related discipline, or equivalent experience

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a communications, videography, illustrator or photography role
  • Working with style and branding guides
  • Working in an office environment and using MS Office systems
  • Practical experience and knowledge of content creation and/or management systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of design work and working with external designers and photographers

Aptitudes and skills required

Essential criteria
  • Excellent written and visual communication, including writing in plain English (clearly and without jargon)
  • Possess good telephone manner and confidence in dealing with enquiries both internally and externally
  • Good time management, including ability to work to deadlines and deal with conflicting priorities
  • Excellent computer and keyboard skills
  • Able to identify and analyse opportunities (patterns/trends) online and offline and experience of using listening tools to create reports and measure output
  • Basic HTML coding
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Writing for digital channels
  • Visual design and multimedia creation

Special requirements of the post
