The UHS Research & Development Department are looking for a dynamic leader to work with the senior leadership team to develop and grow our commercial portfolio. This exciting new role will allow the successful candidate to develop and lead on the UHS commercial research strategy.

The successful candidate will work with senior leadership in the Southampton Centre for Emerging Therapies and Technologies to grow the portfolio of advanced therapy trials and engage with our commercial partners to ensure Southampton are the at the forefront of cutting-edge research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO

 

As the Commercial Business Development Manager, you will work closely with the R&D senior management team to develop and lead the UHS R&D strategy. This will include:

  • Acting as the primary contact point for commercial partners.
  • Developing strategic relationships with commercial partners in order to grow the UHS commercial research portfolio.
  • Working with clinicians, clinical academics and industry representatives to identify and develop potential areas of commercial research and facilitate communication and collaboration.
  • Maintain an overview of commercial contract research at UHS through active engagement with R&D teams, local investigators, delivery teams and commercial partners.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The successful candidate should have specialist, professional knowledge of clinical research management. The ideal candidate would have experience working in this area in both the NHS and the pharmaceutical industry.

The following skills and experience are required for this post:

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the regulatory and legislative processes and drivers of Commercial Research
  • Ability to engage with commercial/CRO/sponsor – and understand their drivers & concerns
  • Experience in the area of project management with highly developed project management skills.
  • Experience of writing and implementing policies and procedures, organisational strategies and business cases
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly in the use of web applications
  • A flexible approach to work and the ability to adjust workload to changing priorities

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Both internal and external secondments will be considered. The role is predominately home based with some on site working and UK travel.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Specialist, professional knowledge of clinical research management acquired through a degree or equivalent experience relevant to the role.
  • Master level qualification or equivalent experience in related field relevant to the role.
  • Evidence of continued professional development within a management role
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the regulatory and legislative processes and drivers of Commercial Research
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of EU and UK legislation and guidance relating to the conduct of research e.g. Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulation, UK Policy Framework for Health & Social Care Research
  • Experience in clinical research and/or clinical research management
  • Experience of working for a Contract Commercial Organisation (CRO), Pharma or Medical Device company conducting clinical research.
  • Experience of accurately costing clinical research projects for both NHS and commercial
  • Experience in the area of project management with highly developed project management skills.
  • Experience of writing and implementing policies and procedures, organisational strategies and business cases
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of monitoring clinical research in the NHS.
  • Experience of working in an NHS R&D environment.

  • Excellent communicator, able to communicate with individuals at all levels of seniority both within and outside of the organisation
  • Ability to communicate complex information orally and in writing to a range of audiences.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Ability to manage a complex workload, prioritise and work to tight deadlines.
  • Proven analytical, report writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly in the use of Web applications and MS Office applications.
  • Ability to influence change with senior managers and clinicians within the organisation.
  • Ability to engage with commercial/CRO/sponsor – and understand their drivers & concerns
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to engage with NHS partners across primary, secondary and community care
  • Knowledge of the interface between the NIHR and NHS and how this supports commercial contract research
  • Experience using local and national portfolio management systems
