At University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), we have a rare opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated pharmacist to join our well-established multidisciplinary adult Nutrition Support and Intestinal Failure team (NSIFT). You will also be part of the specialist clinical pharmacy service to our Surgery care group.
We require a pharmacist with sound knowledge of clinical pharmacy services and strong team working skills to integrate within a large team of pharmacists and the multidisciplinary team. This would be an ideal position for someone looking to specialise in a rewarding and challenging field of clinical pharmacy practice.
UHS is a regional centre for intestinal failure with a 17-bed intestinal failure ward and provides specialist treatment for patients across the south of England. The NSIFT manage patients with complex gut disorders affecting their nutrition and fluid status, who require parenteral nutrition and intravenous fluids in both hospital and home settings.
The NSIFT host an annual nationally recognised Nutrition Course, as well as the twice yearly Southern Home Intestinal Failure Network (SHIFNet) meetings. This year, the team won the Trust’s Hospital Heroes Patient Safety Award.
UHS provide major and complex as well as tertiary surgical services in specialist areas including breast and endocrine surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and urological surgery.
Our Surgical clinical pharmacy team have a great track record of developing extended roles of practice, this includes pharmacist independent prescribing, participating in antimicrobial stewardship ward rounds, and contributing to the development of innovative care pathways that have reduced the length of stay and increased the volume of day surgery undertaken.
You will work closely with the other pharmacist members of the NSIF team, which includes Consultant Gastroenterologists, specialist nurses and dietitians, as well as the Surgical clinical pharmacy team. You will be given the opportunity to be involved in the innovation and development of pharmacy services to the NSIF and Surgical pharmacy service, including:
Participating in multidisciplinary ward rounds
Providing a clinical ward pharmacy service to the intestinal failure ward and surgical wards
Managing and advising on homecare prescriptions for PN and IV fluids
Collaborating with members of the NSIFT and homecare companies
Delivering extended roles of practice including independent prescribing (training will be provided)
Undertaking audit and teaching within the multidisciplinary team and the pharmacy department, and contribute to the development of relevant policies and guidelines.
You will be supported by experienced senior members of the team and given the opportunity to develop advanced level skills.
A pharmacist with a passion for clinical pharmacy who is eager to learn and progress their career
Ability to communicate well, inspire confidence and work well both independently and as part of a team.
Sound clinical knowledge and experience in delivering a ward based clinical pharmacy service
Post-graduate education in clinical pharmacy.
Good organisational and problem-solving skills.
Previous experience of parenteral nutrition would be advantageous but is not essential.
