An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the sussessful Medical Virology services at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
This is a new whole-time consultant post in Medical Virology reflecting the priority the Trust places on further developing and investing in Clinical Virology services and represents an opportunity to join a diverse team of Infection specialist Consultants in the Department of Infection, including two Consultants in Medical Virology.  


The post consists of 11 programmed activities per week with 1 PA for 1 in 3 on call remote activity, plus 8% supplement, until 8pm in the evenings, (weekdays and at weekends) to be shared with the two other Consultant Medical Virologists in the Southampton Specialist Virology Centre (SSVC).

The team provides a wide range of diagnostic and clinical services encompassing Medical Virology, Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) and IPC

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do

The post-holder will support the diagnostic and clinical virology services, provided by the regional centre of expertise, namely Southampton Specialist Virology Centre.

The post holder will be expected to provide

  • Clinical virology support to GPs and to UHS clinicians by attending MDTs
  • Undertake ward consults, preparing guidelines and supporting infection control activities
  • Contribute to the development of the virology diagnostic laboratory, working together with consultants and clinical scientist colleagues

There will be opportunities to contribute to research work in collaboration with the University of Southampton, other academic institutions and the private sector. An appointee with dual accreditation in ID and Medical Virology will be given the opportunity to undertake clinical work contributing to Infectious Diseases inpatient and/or outpatient care. The post holder will be also encouraged to support the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching curriculum and to contribute to the supervision of infection trainees in the department undertaking a training module in Medical Virology.

  • Or show evidence of equivalency
  • Or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview

If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Virology or a joint CCT in Medical Virology and Infectious Diseases or show evidence of equivalent qualification or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • Hold full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council or (be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • Higher degree (MSc, PhD) in Virology

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate clinical experience including, for example, management of virological complications in immunocompromised patients in haematopoietic stem cell transplant units, viral hepatitis, HIV medicine, fetal and neonatal infections, neurological infection
  • In-depth understanding of in-house and commercial molecular tests, manual and automated serology
  • Understanding of quality assurance including verification and validation processes for the introduction of new diagnostic tests
  • Evidence of developing guidelines and SOPs
  • Understanding of clinical governance including audit
  • Evidence of up-to-date training including CPD Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
