We’re looking for motivated, experienced and enthusiastic Biomedical Support Worker to join the microbiology team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).

ABOUT THE TEAM

The UHS Pathology Department offers a 24/7, 365 day clinical and laboratory service to UHS, GPs in the local area and specialist tests to other hospitals throughout the UK. We are a regional, supra-regional and national specialist service provider. Each pathology department works closely together and with our service users to provide excellent service to our patients.

Microbiology processes over 600,000 specimens per annum and employs over 70 staff.  It provides a comprehensive service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology and parasitology, and has a well-equipped molecular facility.  There is a wide range of equipment throughout the department including MALDI-TOF, Sedimax, BacT/Alert, BD MGIT, Serosep Enteric-bio, GeneXpert, Bio-Fire, Hologic Panther, Diasorin Liason and a range of extraction and PCR platforms. We also provide a large SARS-CoV-2 testing service. You  will be expected to work throughout all of sections of the department on a rotational basis and will be required to work core hours and participate in the weekend and out of hours service. The laboratory is accredited for training with the IBMS and HCPC.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • As a Biomedical Support Worker, you will be expected to work throughout all of sections of the department on a rotational basis and the ability to work flexibly as part of the 24/7 rota is essential.
  • You will be responsible for the reception/data entry and processing of clinical specimens, these may include a range of swabs, body fluids, and blood samples.
  • You will be involved in setting up a range of routine automated and manual laboratory tests.
  • Assist with the quality management of the laboratory (for example quality control procedures and audit as required).

  • Someone who is able to communicate well with staff in the department and service users
  • You must be able to plan and use your own time economically and effectively
  • A high degree of motivation and enthusiasm is essential for the role
  • A working knowledge of laboratory areas is preferred
