We are looking for a consultant paediatric nephrologist at Southampton Children’s Hospital, a 144 bedded hospital that is part of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. This is a new, full-time, substantive post, providing a tertiary nephrology service for 14 district general hospitals in Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. The post holder will join a team of 3 paediatric nephrologists in the regional paediatric nephro-urology unit which serves a population of about 4.3 million.

The Trust is a major teaching centre for the University of Southampton. Activities involve the diagnosis and management of children with all varieties of renal disease including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, glomerular disease, renal stone disease (supraregional) and tubulopathies. Nephrology shares an 8-bedded ward with urology with whom we are fully integrated. There is a 4-station, purpose-built haemodialysis unit with the ability to perform apheresis. A paediatric day ward is used for infusions of monoclonal antibodies and performing physiological tests. Renal transplants are done at The Evelina London Children’s Hospital with patients returning to Southampton on average 10 days post surgery. Southampton children’s hospital is an international leader in transition of paediatric patients to adult care thanks to the visionary work of Dr Arvind Nagra, one of the three paediatric nephrologists

The post holder would be expected to advise on renal problems within the various sub-specialities. We are looking for a colleague who can add value to the paediatric nephrology services by managing and supporting other consultants and other healthcare professionals on a variety of hospital sites around our region to provide specialist renal input as and when required. Alongside the multi-disciplinary team you will be expected to undertake activity at some local hospitals as part of our commitment to provide specialist support at a regional level.

The hospital offers ample opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and excellent facilities for research and clinical care. The renal unit has well established research links with the nutrition Biomedical Research Centre and the University’s Genomics Research Group. There is an NIHR Wellcome Trust Southampton Clinical Research Facility with dedicated paediatric facilities.

We’ve worked hard as a Trust to improve the efficiency of our services and as a result, we are currently in financial surplus. We are one of England's largest acute teaching trusts and have recently been rated ‘Good’ by the CQC. In the latest national NHS Staff Survey we ranked;

  • seventh in the country for staff engagement
  • fourth best nationally for our proportion of staff saying that they would recommend the hospital as a place to work or to receive care

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and only an hour on the train from central London. The New Forest National Park and the beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep.

The city offers living costs 20% lower than those in London, 13 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted and 13 nearby green spaces to enjoy.
