Online applications are invited for a full time Consultant Occupational Physician post to join our large multidisciplinary occupational health and wellbeing service. This is a replacement post (10 Programmed Activities), and is based at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).


This is an exciting opportunity to join our large multi-disciplinary team, which includes 2 consultant occupational physicians (1.4w.t.e. in addition to the advertised post), a nurse manager, a Speciality Trainee, and 16 OH nurses and wellbeing practitioners with IT and administrative support. The Occupational Health Service has been SEQOHS accredited since 2012. We provide a full range of OH services to 11,500 Trust employees, 4,500 University employees, 4000 healthcare students and a number of local employers through income-generating contracts. We have a strong national reputation, and have won national awards for service innovation and quality improvement. In addition to our clinical work, the UHS OH service are champions for education and research in occupational medicine. We have a strong alliance with the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit and are a collaborating partner in the ARUK/MRC national centre for musculoskeletal health and work.

The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of clinical work, including pre-employment and fitness for work assessments, advice on immunisations and risk assessments, and our award-winning rehabilitation service (Return2Health). You will also have responsibilities for teaching and education. We actively encourage involvement of our clinicians in the national OH
agenda. The new consultant will be accountable to the lead consultant in Occupational Health at UHS (who is also the head of the occupational health service). You will be a clinical superviser to our speciality trainee. We anticipate opportunities to be involved in service leadership over the next 2-4 years.


You’ll need to have a CCT in occupational medicine or be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Alternatively you could be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of the AAC may also apply. Our ideal candidate will be;

Although the advertised post is full-time, we may be able to accommodate a range of part time options. We are also willing to discuss a degree of flexibility about location. Therefore, we would actively encourage applicants who wish to work part time, or for whom geography might be a barrier. A relocation package would be available for the successful candidate if required.


Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.
