An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and passionate Staff Nurse to join our Neuro day of surgery/ day case team within the Wessex Neurological Centre at UHS.

 

Neuro day of surgery comprises 2 areas which provide services to both neurosurgical and neurology patients.

Our neurosurgical patients are admitted here electively and prepared on the morning of their surgery. Staff within the day unit work closely with the surgeons, anaesthetists and their teams to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for patients. A significant amount of neuro surgery is able to be performed as a day case procedure; including awake craniotomy for tumour resection/biopsy, implantation of spinal cord stimulators, angiography, micro-vascular procedures for trigeminal neuralgia and many more. The day of surgery team are responsible for providing pre and post-operative care for these patients ensuring that any medical or nurse specialist reviews are undertaken and then safely discharging the patient with any advice needed.

The neurology day unit caters for a multitude of patients who attend for day case investigation or treatment of neurological disorders. Services include; providing a number of different infusions, a lumbar puncture clinic, assisting with plasma exchange and other day case procedures such as muscle biopsy.

 

In this role you will:

  • Be involved in the elective admissions of neurological and neurosurgical patients.
  • You will be involved in the preparation of the pre-op patient as well as providing post op care for those patients having day case procedures.
  • You will be involved in the administration of a number of IV drug infusion administered to a patients as day care procedures.
  • You will assist members of the medical team in carrying out procedures that are undertaken on the ward such as lumbar puncture, muscle biopsy and a range of other assessments.
  • You will work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to be involved in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care and treatment patients.
  • You will proactively ensure that the MDT provide a joined up service, ensuring patients arrive to any pre-booked tests on time and ensuring that they are seen in a timely manner by the teams responsible for their care.

Specific training will be provided in house to ensure that a successful applicant would have all skills and knowledge needed to provide care in this area.
