An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the innovative and dynamic Neonatal Intensive Care Service at University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) as a Consultant Neonatologist. This is a locum post pending substantive appointment following relocation of a consultant colleague. 

The successful applicant will complete a team of 9.5 WTE neonatologists who provide a comprehensive neonatal service to medical and surgical neonates at Princess Anne Hospital in a 38 bed NICU (24 IC/ HDU, 14 SC). The NICU is the lead centre within Wessex Neonatal Operational Delivery Network, providing tertiary neonatal services including cardiology and surgery together with complex babies requiring tertiary endocrinology, genetics, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgical, ophthalmology, ENT and respiratory services within the Southampton Children’s Hospital. In addition, the NICU hosts the Southampton hub of the Southampton-Oxford Neonatal Transport Service (SONeT) and undertakes approximately 600 Network transfers per year. The post holder will have clinical commitment to the Neonatal service and the Network Transport service within Wessex.

The department is research active with a strong academic team led by Professor Howard Clark, Dr Mark Johnson Associate Prof Brigitte Vollmer and Associate Prof Nigel Hall.  There are close links to the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and MRC. Candidates would be expected to support the on-going research programme and to engage in NIHR portfolio studies. There are excellent opportunities for personal development, research and teaching.

The successful candidate would be expected to deliver clinical excellence, be motivated and adaptable to changes within the NHS. A willingness to develop and work within a constantly changing environment is necessary together with an ability to remain calm under pressure. Candidates should have a CCT in Neonates (or equivalent experience: 24 months in a level 3 neonatal unit plus 12 months related experience) or experience as a consultant in a level 3 neonatal unit and be on the GMC’s Specialist Register.  Trainees who are within six months of obtaining their CCT on the date of the AAC may also apply. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
