We are looking for a Senior Medical Doctor (Consultant or GP) to join us as a Medical Examiner. You must have successfully completed the mandatory components of the national online medical examiner curriculum. Face-to-face training must be completed within the first three months of being in post.
You will be contracted for a number of sessions a week to undertake medical examiner duties, outside of their usual clinical duties.
Medical Examiners will take a consistent approach to the formulation of Medical certificates of cause of death content, which must be clinically accurate and reflect any discussions with the next of kin/informant. Medical examiners will not have been involved in the care of the deceased patients for deaths they scrutinise.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
What you’ll do
The UHS Medical Examiners Service is about to expand to cover all community deaths in the region and require additional consultant MEs to deliver the service.
Medical examiners examine deaths to:
- agree the proposed cause of death and the overall accuracy of the medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD) with the doctor completing it
- discuss the cause of death with the next of kin/informant and establish if they have questions or any concerns with care before death
- act as a medical advice resource for the local coroner
- inform the selection of cases for further review under local mortality arrangements and contribute to other clinical governance procedures
What we’re looking for
We are looking for a Consultant or GP who is empathetic and able to adapt their approach to suit a variety of situations and audiences. Successful candidates will have the ability to liaise with the bereaved of all faiths and communities in a compassionate, sensitive and understanding manner. Medical Examiners will have a close working relationship with the Bereavement Care Team, Mortuary staff, Spiritual Care Team, the Coroner’s Office and the Trusts’ Governance Team.
Registered with a licence to practice in the UK by the GMC.
As a pre-condition of practicing, an Medical Examiner must have successfully completed the mandatory components of the national online medical examiner curriculum. Face-to-face training must be completed within the first three months of being in post.
Pay and conditions
Consultants will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003. Salary will be assessed in line with terms and conditions £84,559 - £114,003
GP will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Specialty Doctors – England (2021) Salary will be assessed in line with terms and conditions £45,124 - £77,519
