As a result of listening to our staff, Southampton maternity services have recently undergone a complete workforce redesign and are seeking to recruit experienced midwives, with a minimum of one year experience, to work within both our Midwifery-led and Obstetric-led pathways.  The successful applicants must be able to demonstrate enthusiasm, dedication and a commitment to working in partnership with women and other agencies to support the vision of continuity, choice and exemplary midwifery care for women and their families according to UHS Trust values.

This exciting recruitment opportunity is not one to be missed!  As a band 6 midwife, seeking professional development, Southampton maternity services offer a multitude of possibilities for career progression. Following the success of our bespoke preceptorship programme, we have seen a significant number of new midwifery recruits over the last 12 months. In turn, it is recognised that our band 6 midwives play an essential role in supporting and mentoring these junior team members and are a highly valued part of the workforce. Increased responsibility within the clinical settings, supported by appropriate training and education for our band 6 midwives, provide experience and exposure for individuals aspiring to leadership, managerial and specialist practitioner roles.

In support of our strategy for supporting succession planning, Southampton Maternity Services are proud to have fully implemented a management development programme aimed specifically for band 6 midwives who are wishing to develop their midwifery career. This initiative has already proved extremely popular, whilst serving to promote an ethos of transparency and equality across the team, as well as a greater understanding of individual roles and responsibilities.

Southampton Maternity Services recognise the importance of positive team culture and individual job satisfaction. For this reason, we fully support flexible working arrangements in agreement with service requirement.

Southampton is a vibrant, modern city situated on the south coast with excellent links to London and neighbouring towns.  Known as the ‘Green City’ for its numerous award winning parks and green spaces, it is also a short drive away from the New Forest National Park.  The city plays host to over four million visitors a year and boasts an impressive cultural offering including museums, music venues and art galleries.  Southampton also provides easy access to the coast and all of the scenic walks and water sports, such as wakeboarding, windsurfing and sailing that this provides.

The Trust is a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton and partners including the Medical Research Council, Welcome Trust and Cancer Research Campaign.  As such we provide excellent levels of education, training and learning for our healthcare professionals and support/administrative members of staff.  A wide range of staff in-house training courses are available and staff frequently attend external training courses.  These development opportunities both improve skills and performance within existing roles and also enable staff to build their career within their chosen pathway.

Key requirements include:

  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to develop sound relationships with women and colleagues within and external to the trust.
  • A fundamental understanding of public health issues and women’s health needs within the context of changing health care provision.
  • Full flexibility in a working roster period to include night duties, week-ends and public holidays, as well as contribution to an on call rota.

Closing date for applications Wednesday 31st October.
