An exciting opportunity has arisen for motivated and passionate band 5 staff nurses to join our Hyper acute stroke unit (HASU), within the Wessex Neurological Unit at UHS.

HASU is currently a 10 bedded unit which caters for all acute stroke admissions admitted directly from ED to commence on the stroke care pathway. Many of these patients are given thrombolysis treatment on the unit and if indicated then some patients may receive intra-arterial clot retrieval (mechanical thrombectomy) which has shown greatly improved patient outcomes in recent studies

This is a particularly exciting time to join our team as there are plans in progress to develop the mechanical thrombectomy service we provide. This will allow UHS to provide a regional service throughout the Wessex region, that in time will be able to provide 24/7 access to this treatment. In light of this, later this year HASU will be gaining a further 3 fully equipped hyper acute beds to facilitate this service expansion.

HASU is a dynamic and fast paced area of work where you would develop and utilise acute nursing skills. All the while being supported by a multidisciplinary team including trained stroke nurses, therapy staff and Advanced Nurse Practitioners. A role on this ward would suit nurses anywhere on their career pathway; from a newly qualified nurse looking to gain acute experience, to a more experienced nurse looking to develop skills for career progression into leadership, Advanced Nurse Practitioner or other specialised roles.

In this role you will:

  • Be involved in the direct admissions for all stroke patients.
  • You will be involved in the administration of thrombolysis and the subsequent monitoring that is required.
  • You will work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to be involved in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care and treatment for all stroke patients.
  • You will be involved in the early rehabilitation of stroke patients until a bed becomes available on our rehab ward – F8.

If you are:

  • Passionate about delivering high quality patient care
  • Motivated and forward thinking
  • Eager to develop your own clinical and management skills
  • Enjoy the challenge of working in a busy environment
  • Looking for a position which will challenge and stretch you
  • Want to be part of a focused, multidisciplinary team that delivers a high quality service

If so then this is the post for you!

We support our staff, offering a huge variety of learning opportunities and support for career progression. When it comes to careers we are committed to developing yours. We support both professional and personal development, recognising its importance in delivering a quality service.

Our education, training and development team works alongside individuals and teams in practice. Formal teaching sessions and study days, such as practical stroke study days and the Neuro Course will be available, as is advice on academic pathways and career planning.

If you have a real passion for nursing and you are looking for an exciting, fast moving clinical field to develop your skills then look no further, apply now and join our team.

Closing date for applications Tuesday 6 November.
