University Hospital Southampton is looking to recruit a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in glaucoma. The Southampton Eye Unit provides a comprehensive range of Ophthalmic subspecialties for the population of Hampshire.  The Consultants within the unit have the following subspecialties, Vitreo Retinal, Glaucoma, Medical Retina, Cornea, Oculoplastics, Orbital, Neuro-ophthalmology and Paediatric/Strabismus. The department also runs a 24 hour Ophthalmic Emergency Service.  The Southampton Eye Unit is active in both clinical and laboratory research. This is supported by a University Professor and two Associate Professors in Ophthalmology.

We are currently actively expanding our glaucoma service and are seeking an ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in glaucoma to join our team of 22 consultant colleagues, 5 trust doctors, 11 fellows and 13 speciality trainees in a research intensive, state of the art ophthalmic unit. This includes HRA, electrodiagnostics, YAG and SLT laser, PASCAL and PDT laser, and dedicated medical retina injection suite. The glaucoma service is developing the peripheral sites in west Hampshire to provide an efficient glaucoma review service and the post holder will be expected to be part of this. This post will include cataract surgical sessions at peripheral sites as well as surgery within Southampton Eye unit for glaucoma procedures.

Southampton has rapid road and rail links to London as well as a Regional airport for easy travel to continental Europe. The New Forest, Isle of Wight and Test Valley are all within 30 minutes of the hospital.

Applicants should have substantial experience in glaucoma and be on the Specialist Register for ophthalmology or equivalent or be within 3 months of CCT.

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

We’ve worked hard as a Trust to improve the efficiency of our services and as a result, we are currently in financial surplus. We are one of England's largest acute teaching trusts and have recently been rated ‘Good’ by the CQC. In the latest national NHS Staff Survey we ranked;

  • seventh in the country for staff engagement
  • fourth best nationally for our proportion of staff saying that they would recommend the hospital as a place to work or to receive care

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and only an hour on the train from central London. The New Forest National Park and the beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep.

The city offers living costs 20% lower than those in London, 13 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted and 13 nearby green spaces to enjoy.

All applications must be made online.  CV or paper applications are not accepted.
