Job overview

Here at UHS we have a truly unique opportunity, where you will be able to choose how you split your role, depending on your preferences and career ambitions. You can choose to work in one of three roles in the GICU middle grade doctor team:

100% clinical role, with opportunity for competency certification in all aspects of ICM medicine for any relevant training programme.
50:50 research/clinical role. Out of hours work will be focused on the middle grade (airway) rota for the GICU and weekday working will be dedicated to a research project with full support from our experienced research group.
50:50 clinical/FUSIC fellowship role. Out of hours work will be focused on the middle grade (airway) rota for the GICU and weekday working will be dedicated to FICE training, supported by our experienced Consultant FICE mentors.

Option 1: Standard elements of ICM training

  • You will join the middle grade rota for other Drs in training and have access to competency certification in the full range of General ICM clinical activities. Suitable for those training in ICM, in Anaesthetics or in similar specialities.
  • Once established, (after at least 6 months), there is opportunity to transfer to other clinical areas, (Cardiac ICM, Neuro ICM, Paediatric ICM and General Medicine) as required for single speciality training equivalence. For the right candidate, this could lead to the opportunity to develop a GMC-approved CESR pathway for Specialist Registration in single speciality ICM.

Main duties of the job

Option 2: Clinical And Research (50:50)

  • This post offers an opportunity to develop research skills with 50:50 clinical and research commitments. UHS has an expanding Research portfolio in Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine.
  • These posts provide an opportunity for a Senior Fellow to pursue research projects at all levels including involvement in ongoing studies within the department or to pursue personal research interests. The successful candidate can make use of established datasets to explore their ideas.
  • There are also opportunities to become NIHR associate principal investigator for several clinical trials in both critical care and perioperative medicine.

Option 3: Clinical and FUSIC Fellowship (50:50)

  • These posts offer an opportunity to develop expertise in FUSIC with 50:50 clinical and FUSIC fellowship commitments. Our department is enthusiastic about point-of-care ultrasound as an imaging modality for clinical care.
  • We have several accredited clinicians who will provide training and education in FUSIC Heart and Lung modules to complete Intensive Care Society (ICS) certification within six months.
  • We also have experience using point-of-care ultrasound for research, having completed a recent study of nebulised surfactant in covid pneumonitis.

In addition to 1:1 teaching, a weekly transthoracic echocardiography meeting is provided through our cardiology department, and we also run bi-monthly governance sessions internally.
