An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) within the Estates team.

The successful candidate will support the Estates Manager Electrical by managing, developing and coordinating the activities and assets comprising the electrical systems and other delegated plant consistent with statutory regulation, safe working practices and Client, Corporate and Estates policy and procedures.

As well as this, you will act as an “Authorised person” for High Voltage and Low Voltage Electrical Systems, and as an Authorised Person in any other discipline that you are trained to hold.               

This role is offered on a full time (37.5 hours per week) basis with a requirement to take part in the on call rota.

The estates strategy reflects four key themes:

  • Proposals to eradicate the high level of backlog maintenance and reduce the consequential risks to the Trust, through a major backlog maintenance business case and increased UHS annual investment.

  • The delivery of the 'NHS Plan' for the major capital programme to modernise the accommodation in the estates.

  • The need to invest in the estate infrastructure (for example energy supplies, roads and car parking) to support the service and estate strategies.

  • The setting of performance targets for the estate, against which improvements in quality of the patient environment, controls assurance and risk reduction, and operational effectiveness can be measured.


- Work within a highly dedicated Electrical Team providing strong leadership and guidance on all aspects of Electrical Systems within the SUHT Hospitals.

- You will be expected to assist the Electrical Managers to provide viable and sustainable services on all forms of Electrical equipment.

- Assist Project Teams and Consultants with Electrical guidance for varied Building Expansion works at SUHT.

- Within your team plan Electrical shutdowns on LV and HV Systems, completing Electrical Safety programmes and issuing permits to work on a regular basis as an Authorised Person.

- Sign up Electrical Contactor`s and maintenance staff as Low Voltage Competent Persons.


- Highly motivated team member with HNC qualifications and significant relevant experience.

- Experience in managing directly employed labour and contract staff.

- You will be required to be flexible to changing demands of the Trust.

- Strong focus and quality and customer service.

You will be expected to find solutions to complex electrical engineering challenges that frequently arise. You will need to be proactive and be able to lead in a technical capacity when required to NHS project managers, external consultants and senior management within the NHS.

You will have attention to detail and be well versed in HTM (suite series 06) and BS 7671 standard. It will be required to be able to further research BS standards, H&S memorandums and best engineering practices when faced with design and installation queries. 

You will need to act professionally and represent the Estates Infrastructure Team technically in line with HTM and BS standards.

You will have dedication to the projects assigned by the infrastructure electrical manager to see them through and find meaningful solutions to overcome challenges that will arise.

You will have, or be required to develop, a strong cost management approach to ensure that projects are correctly budgeted for and completed within this limit.

You will be proficient in time management and be able to execute your daily duties and provide adequate time for reporting to the electrical infrastructure manager as agreed with them.
