Our unit caters for mixed specialty adult patients including cardiac surgery, congenital heart disease, thoracic and cardiology patients requiring specialist high dependency care.

You will join our friendly and dedicated CHDU team, within a care group which has a local, national and international reputation for delivering expert cardiothoracic care to our patients. Clinical expertise is at the forefront of making sure that patients have the best clinical outcome and receive care that is current and evidence based.

-          Complex electrophysiological treatments

-          Congenital

The cardiothoracic care group provides regional tertiary cardiothoracic services as well as meeting the local needs of people in the Southampton, Eastleigh and New Forest areas; in total a population of approximately two million people. The commitment, knowledge and skill of our staff are integral in delivering a high quality service to this population.

As well as the relevant qualifications, we are looking for you to demonstrate:

-          The skills to work in a challenging environment

-          Enthusiastic approach to learning including self directed learning

-          The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

In this post, you will have the opportunity to gain skills and competence in:

-          short-term ventilation,

-          non-invasive ventilation,

-          inotropes, and

-          intra-aortic balloon pump therapy.

You will be provided with a supernumerary period, high dependency unit (HDU) induction sessions, bedside coaching and a competency based programme to support you through your career progression. You will also benefit from the support of our dedicated and enthusiastic education and senior nursing team within the unit, who provide ongoing development and training.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is one of England's largest acute teaching trusts. We've recently been rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey we ranked seventh in the country for staff engagement, and fourth best nationally for our proportion of staff saying that they would recommend the hospital as a place to work or to receive care. One of our main objectives has been to become a top ten research trust, with the pharmacy department being an integral part of achieving this.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and only an hour on the train from central London. The New Forest National Park and the beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep.

The city offers living costs 20% lower than those in London, 13 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted and 13 nearby green spaces to enjoy.
