Job overview

Applications are invited for Junior Fellows in General Intensive Care combined with CICU and SHDU.These post are for 6 months initially, extendable to 1 year. Previous critical care experience is not essential. Applicants with Anaesthetics, medical, emergency medicine or surgical backgrounds will be considered. Support for study leave will be given. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the clinical research trials and audits currently underway. There is a potential to spend time in the Cardiac ITU and SHDU teams to gain valuable training. The post will provide training and experience in all aspects of Intensive Care Medicine in a large multidisciplinary unit

The team is built up of 15 Consultants who work in adult general intensive care. Trainees come from anaesthetics, surgery, medicine and A&E. They range from FY2 to senior SpR.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Junior fellows are primarily involved in the daily management of intensive care patients and surgical high dependency patients. Attendance at ward rounds is expected. Routine work is shared among the junior medical staff. Trainees will be expected to have or be willing to acquire skills such as central venous insertion and arterial cannulation. More complex procedures may be undertaken if progress allows. Fellows will be expected to adjust organ support measures after receiving appropriate training. Attention to record keeping must be meticulous. It is expected that clinical handover to colleagues must be comprehensive.

The post will provide training and experience in all aspects of Intensive Care Medicine in a large multidisciplinary unit admitting approximately 1500 patients per year. The Intensive Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital provides Critical Care services for a wide range of specialities including General Surgery, General Medicine, Trauma, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery. The unit is recognised for training by the Intercollegiate Board for Training in ICM at all levels including the CCT programme.


This post is intended for Junior Fellows who wish to gain experience in the management of Level 3 and Level 2 patients in an

Intensive Care Unit. Preference will be given to those who have previous experience in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia


Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary – MT03           £39,467                               

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

  • At least 2 years post qualification
Desirable criteria
  • FRCA / MRCP / FRCS / MCEM or equivalent.
  • Current ALS / ATLS certification
