We are offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join and support our dynamic Acute paediatric Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) team in a new role as an SLT Assistant. We are looking for an enthusiastic and well-organised person, who relates well to children, to work under the supervision of Speech and Language Therapists

The role will involve carrying out speech, language and swallowing therapy programmes under the direction of trained Speech and Language Therapists, assisting during treatment sessions/groups, and supporting the SLT team with administrative tasks.

Training will be provided on the job and you will be supported to develop within the role through regular supervision and the successful  post holder must be able to self-reflect in order to develop and maintain competency to practice through continuing professional development. You must be a good communicator and willing to work flexibly as part of a team. Practicality and the ability to solve problems on the spot would be an advantage.

There may be occasional need to support the SLT team working with adults.

 You will be part  the wider multidisciplinary team that includes Speech and Language Therapists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Nurses and Doctors

Our paediatric SLT team consists of 4 clinical specialists. They are part of a much larger adult SLT team of 20+ therapist who foster and support staff across a wide range of clinical areas, helping to provide excellent learning opportunities. The SLT team is managed jointly with the Dietetic service and we are based in lovely  modern offices  at the hospital

The service is recognised as an essential part of the collaborative MDT working  approach and  environment that provides a quality and timely service to acute patients, at the acute and rehabilitation stages of their recovery pathway .

The successful candidates would be required to:

  • Complete daily patient data
  • Work closely with MDT colleagues in the planning and goal setting for individual patients- joint sessions
  • Liaise closely with relatives and carers and provide relevant support with an individual’s communication and swallowing function.
  • Deliver regular individual and group therapy sessions under the guidance of a therapist
  • Collect and act on patient and carer feedback
  • Contribute to audits and specific projects
  • Make materials to be used in therapy and IT-based resources, e.g. communication passports
  • Clean therapy equipment in accordance with Infection Control Policy
  • Assist in group work with children
  • Use electronic notes to write up therapy notes
  • Demonstrate therapy to MDT colleagues
  • Attend and participate in team meetings
  • Help organise and support SLT with planning and delivery of training sessions
