An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Nurse to join our dynamic interdisciplinary team to support evidence based, excellence in nursing care and provide services to children and their families to achieve self-management of their dermatological disease. Initially for a 6 month period, this post aims to provide vital support in managing the patient workload that has been affected by Covid-19 delays, ensuring timely contact, support and advice to families and children and prevent any unnecessary hospital admissions. This post is 18.75 hours per week.

The paediatric Dermatology service provides multidisciplinary, high quality, secondary and tertiary care for children and young people suffering with often complex dermatological disease.

This innovative role will support the Allergy and dermatology clinical nurse specialist in the delivery of high quality,  evidence based care of children, young people and their families suffering with a broad range of dermatological conditions, Including eczema, Psoriasis and acne. In addition to leading nursing services in paediatric surgical dermatology procedures, biologics and Triamcinolone injection therapies.

This role will involve cross site, autonomous working and nurse led clinics in addition to educating and supporting staff and other members of the Multidisciplinary team to develop competency in this field. 

ABOUT THE TEAM

There are currently 3 Consultants and one Specialist Nurse within the paediatric team but the team works very closely with the adult dermatology service at the Royal South Hants Hospital. The service see’s both local and tertiary patients and mainly operates in an outpatient capacity with capacity for inpatient admissions if required. We work closely with and offer support and advice to other specialities within Southampton Children’s Hospital. Friday is our busy paediatric dermatological day, with clinics, ward rounds, administration of biologics and paediatric dermatology surgical lists. The clinical nurse specialist holds a dual role with allergy allowing close liaison with the paediatric allergy service. The dermatology team actively teach and contribute to the internationally renowned Allergy MSC at Southampton University.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

As an autonomous practitioner you will:

  • Review the child/ young person in nurse led clinics, advising on topical therapy regimes and promoting concordance and self-management.

  • Provide education and support to other members of the healthcare team both within Southampton Children’s Hospital, other hospitals served by the service and primary care.

  • Provide specialist advice, education and support to the child, young person,

  • Co-ordinate, manage and lead the nursing service in the safe and effective provision of paediatric dermatology surgery under local anaesthetic.

  • Support and educate families and children in the home administration of appropriate biologics.

  • Support children undergoing triamcinolone injection therapies.

  • Support children, young people and families to ensure smooth transition from paediatric to adult services.

  • Support paediatric dermatology services between Southampton Children’s Hospital and Royal South Hants to ensure best evidence based practice and safe care throughout the child’s journey.

  • Manage dermatology support service offering advice and support to families and children.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a motivated Children’s nurse with a high-level of inter-personal, multi-tasking skills and commitment for delivering a high quality service in caring for our children and families. The post holder will be an experienced sick children’s nurse with real interest in the care of children and families with dermatological disease. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work flexibly and autonomously within a dedicated team in a busy regional centre.

RN child/ RSCN with an interest in paediatric dermatology and experience of teaching is essential

A first level degree or equivalent or a willingness to undertake and  experience in research and audit would be desirable
