An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Cardiovascular & Thoracic care group as a Housekeeper at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Trust. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Housekeeper. The cardiovascular & thoracic care group provides regional services to Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Dorset and West Sussex in the provision of tertiary cardiothoracic services. In addition, the care group meets the needs of local people in the Southampton, Eastleigh and New Forest areas; in total we provide cardiothoracic services for a population of approximately two million people. The commitment, knowledge and skills of our staff are integral in delivering a high-quality service to this population.


The ward housekeeper will be responsible for providing a house keeping service, ensuring that the ward is kept clean and that drinks, snacks and meals are available for the benefit and comfort for the patients.

You will work alongside all disciplines of staff in a co-operative manner.  As a ward housekeeper you will monitor the ward environment and undertake housekeeping tasks to ensure the ward environment is clean and presentable, complying with control of Infection, health and safety and all other Trust policies.

You will liaise with the Ward Sister / Charge Nurse or the person in charge and help the health care team by undertaking the following duties:

  • Order and receive all catering stores.

  • Order and receive patient teacups, saucers, water glasses and water jugs.

  • Check and clean all ward refrigerators.

  • Work with ward domestic staff to make the patient’s beds at a convenient time to the ward.

  • Routinely clean in-patients’ bedside lockers and tables.

  • Clean equipment and store correctly.

  • Monitor and ensure that there are adequate stock levels of linen available to the ward, liaising with linen room as required.

  • Ensure the ward is appropriately prepared prior to meal times to help with the distribution of meals, assist designated patients with eating (as per ward procedures) and encourage patients to eat. (e.g. cutting up food, removing food coverings, cling film etc.)

  • Liaise with nursing staff with any questions or queries.


  • A well-mannered, friendly individual. You will have good interpersonal skills and be caring and compassionate with an understanding of hospital life and what the role involves.

  • You will have experience of working with people with a keen focus on customer service.

  • You will need a good attention to detail, and an ability to cope with routine.

  • Having a commitment to environmental issues will be desirable.
