We are the first in the UK to develop a ‘Post Registration Surgical Nursing Course’ for General Surgical nursing, affiliated with the University of Southampton, called the Principle of Surgical Nursing (POSN).  We are providing this at MSc / Degree or not for credit. Course Badge and certificate provided.

The curriculum provides a focus on specific elements of surgical ward nursing,

  • You will complete the ALARM course (previously AIM); spend time in the simulation suite with specific focus on the care of the acutely ill surgical patient. Opportunities are also available to undertake the UHS Physical Assessment and History Taking Course.
  • You will spend the day in theatres, experiencing with the patient their pre op to post op journey, through every step of their procedure.
  • You will be become skilled in wound, stoma and pain management in theory and in practice.
  • You will have six bespoke classroom study sessions to provide you with the opportunity to explore and expand upon your surgical nursing skills and knowledge relating practice to theory being educated by a range of professional clinical experts.
  • You will undertake clinical audit and share ideas and thoughts regarding nursing research by spending time with our Nurse Consultant.

We are investing in surgical nursing to develop skills and knowledge to improve our patients care.

What team are you joining whilst you undertake this course?

We are General Surgery Nursing at UHS, Southampton.  We deliver care to 11,000 planned patient admissions, 8,000 emergency patient admissions, 45,000 outpatient appointments and 25,000 outpatient procedures.  Whilst undertaking this course you will join our nursing team, learning and being supported in your clinical practice within General Surgery by our senior nurses, our education and practice development teams.
