ABOUT THE TEAM
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is a major teaching centre for the University of Southampton offering opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and excellent facilities for research and clinical care
This is an opportunity to join a team of Acute Physicians who are expanding to 10. The unit serves a population of 330,000 and is a teaching department of the University of Southampton. The Acute Medical Unit is a purpose built 54-bedded unit. We have a Same Day Emergency Care facility which has 5 trolley spaces and chairs for assessment of both expected patients and those patients on an ambulatory pathway. In December 2018, we opened a co-located clinical area with a further 6 trolleys providing additional assessment facilities. The department has a reputation for clinical excellence and innovation. We are looking for a dynamic consultant who has the ambition and drive to further develop our services. We are particularly keen on a Consultant who has basic Echocardiogram skills to develop and evolve our unit.
The expansion of physicians is to provide improved daytime and weekend cover within the acute medical unit and supports an acute physician presence within the Emergency Department, 7 days per week. The weekend rota will be shared with 2 other medical consultants.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Jointly lead the organisation and development of Acute Medicine in the division including arrangements for the associated junior medical staff
Work in close collaboration with the Emergency Department consultants to improve the management of medical emergencies, to achieve the 4 hr emergency access target and support development of ambulatory pathways
Maintain and implement guidelines for emergency management
Assist in triaging and arranging rapid investigations to reduce the length of stay
Offer immediate support to junior medical staff involved in the management of emergency medicine
Teach students and junior medical staff in the recognition and management of acutely unwell medical patients
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Applicants should have a CCT /CESR in General Internal Medicine, or be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CCT on the date of the interview may also apply. Applicants who have dual accreditation in another medical speciality, including Acute Internal Medicine, are encouraged to apply for the post.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.
Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application.
