Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the successful and vibrant Women’s services at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, as a Locum Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with special interest in ambulatory and emergency gynaecology. This is a 6 month post to cover for long term sick leave.

ABOUT THE TEAM

We provide an extensive range of general and specialised tertiary level gynaecology services including advanced laparoscopic, BSGE endometriosis accreditation, gynae-oncology, urogynaecology and mesh removal surgery. There is a well-developed early pregnancy service. Out-patient facilities include comprehensive obstetric and gynaecology ultrasound, hysteroscopy, colposcopy, urodynamics, cystoscopy, the Complete Fertility Unit and women’s physiotherapy. UHS provides community midwifery care, secondary obstetric care to the local population and tertiary obstetrics and neonatology to the Wessex region.

Main duties of the job

You will be based at the Princess Anne Hospital joining the clinical team providing care for the 2WW diagnostic cancer pathway via one stop diagnostic clinics with ultrasound and treatment hysteroscopy clinics and the emergency gynaecology service via the Acute Gynaecology Clinic, Early Pregnancy Unit and provision of emergency gynaecological surgery.

You will support the obstetric service via labour ward sessions and contribute to the resident rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role is intended to support leadership in all aspects of patient care, safety and risk management. You will support the senior resident out of hours on call rota and support consultant presence on the labour ward. The candidate will be expected to deliver clinical excellence within Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

You will be required to meet the training qualifications as per the personal specification demonstrating relevant experience to support the role.

We are keen to hear from individuals with significant experience in emergency gynaecology and maternity service provision, including complex antenatal and intra partum care.

A willingness to learn and work within a constantly changing environment is necessary together with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Significant experience in leading service change and the training of medical and non-medical staff is also desirable.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry on the Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the advisory appointments committee
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCOG
  • RCOG intermediate module or equivalent of Gynaecology/Early pregnancy ultrasound
  • ATSM or equivalent demonstrating special interest in either Benign Gynaecology or Hysteroscopy
  • ATSM or equivalent in Advanced Labour Ward Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of research and publications
  • Further higher degree
  • BSCCP accreditation for colposcopy
  • Accredited GMC educational supervisor

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in delivering out-patient diagnostic gynaecology services
  • Experience in using ultrasound in one-stop clinics to stream-line services
  • Accreditation in general obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Ability to manage a busy high risk labour ward and complex obstetric and gynaecology emergencies independently
  • Previous experience of on call
  • O&G as a senior resident in a high risk maternity unit within the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in conducting independent gynaecology operating lists
  • Experience in delivering formal undergraduate and/or postgraduate education
  • Experience in teaching ultrasound skills

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Competence in spoken and written English
  • Advanced understanding of Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement
  • Ability to carry out independent out-patient diagnostic services
  • Leadership Qualities; enthusiastic, flexible, able to adapt to change and to lead service developments
  • Ability to perform independently transvaginal ultrasound
  • Good presentation and communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to perform independent gynaecology operating
  • Evidence of previous relevant experience to make significant developments and contributions to established services with demonstrable output
